Hofmann and Voinov Fall in WPIAL Semi-Finals

Posted on:

The first day of WPIAL Doubles Championship Play for AAA teams took place at the Club in Monroeville Thursday afternoon, and the Tiger duo, seniors Richard Hofmann and Ivan Voinov reached the semi-finals before bowing out. Following a great performance in the Section 2 tournament, the Tigers were seeded third overall and opened play against Harrison Chui and Stefan Cvetkovic of Upper St. Clair. The Tigers took that set 10-4. The quarterfinal round saw a match-up with familiar foes, Fox Chapel. Voinov and Hofmann prevailed against Jared Nord and Karsten Lagerquist, again by a 10-4 score. The semi-finals were contested against the #2 overall seeds from Shady Side Academy, Naman Dua and Colin Grimley. Both teams recorded a service break and traded identical 6-4 scores in the first two sets. The third set again proved eventful, as the Tigers were broken multiple times and found themselves down 4-1. They fought back with two breaks of their own but the third break never came, and another set was determined by a 6-4 score, with Shady Side moving on to the finals.

Congratulations to Richard Hofmann and Ivan Voinov, as the two seniors will continue their academic careers at Penn State and Pitt, respectively. The four year starters competed at a high level in all matches, including Section, WPIAL and PIAA contests. We wish them the best in all of their future endeavors!

Tigers’ seniors Richard Hofmann and Ivan Voinov reached the finals of the WPIAL AAA Tennis Section 2 Doubles Tournament and played the #1 seed, Hampton’s Ted Donegan and Ben Ringeisen.  The Tuesday afternoon contest on the NASH courts started with each team dominating a set. The Tigers took the first set 6-2 while the Talbots controlled the second by the same score. That set the stage for an exciting third stanza that saw multiple lead changes, breaks, and comebacks. Trailing 3-0, the Tigers stormed back and took a 4-3 lead off 3 consecutive service breaks. After several more breaks for each side fell through, the match was squared at 6-6 and headed to a tie break. Each team had match points, but it was Hampton that pulled through with a 7-6 (8-6) win in the third set.

Both teams qualify for the WPIAL AAA Tennis Doubles Championships which start Thursday afternoon. The venue will be the home of the Tigers, the NASH courts, starting at noon.

On a perfect spring Monday, two Tiger teams made their mark on the WPIAL AAA Section 2 Doubles Tournament. The first day of play was conducted on the NASH courts, and seniors Richard Hofmann and Ivan Voinov comprised one team while juniors Mark Chuirazzi and Jerry Huang were the second duo from North Allegheny’s tennis program.  Play is single elimination in nature, and rounds one and two consisted of single, 10 game pro-sets.  In first round action, Hofmann and Voinov, the overall number two seed defeated Moon’s #2 entry, Ley and Shetty, 10-3.  Also dominating in round one, Chuirazzi and Huang (#4 seed) defeated Ryan and Crowley of Mars, the #2 entry from the Planets.

The quarterfinals saw Chuirazzi and Huang fall to Abeet Badrinath and Tim Miller, the 5th seeds and Hampton’s #2 entry.  Meanwhile, Hofmann and Voinov dispatched Seneca Valley’s Steve Vandrak and Jeremy O’Connor to advance to the semi-finals.  In that semi, the NA duo tangled with Logan D’Angelo and Nick Mangelli of Moon, the overall 3rd seed and Moon’s primary team. After several early breaks, Hofmann and Voinov prevailed 6-1 in the first.  The second set started similarly, but the Moon Tigers fought hard and made a battle of it late before the NA Tigers held on to win in straight sets.

Hofmann and Voinov now advance to the championship match Tuesday afternoon against Ted Donegan and Ben Ringeisen of Hampton, the overall #1 tournament seed. Match time is set for 2:00 PM on the NASH courts.
