The reigning WPIAL Class AAA champion North Allegheny Tigers received a first round bye for the upcoming WPIAL boys’ volleyball playoffs this week. The Tigers will host a quarterfinal round match on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and will face the winner of the No. 8 vs. No. 9 game between Baldwin and Shaler. Three members of the North Allegheny boys’ volleyball team have made their college choices official. Setter A.J. Schmidt signed his letter of intent to play at Saint Francis University, defensive specialist Ryan Beck has tabbed Daemen College and outside hitter Canyon Tuman has signed on with Penn State University.
Schmidt split time at the setter position a season ago with co-WPIAL Player of the Year M.J. Barton who has since graduated. Schmidt tallied 524 assists last year and is the primary setter this season.
Beck has been a reliable defensive player for North Allegheny and currently ranks third on the team in digs with 56 entering the week. He will help build a foundation at Daemen College which will participate in its inaugural year for men’s volleyball next season.
With his powerful swings, Tuman led NA with 331 kills and 67 aces in 2017. Tuman also ranked third on the team in blocks with 64, on his way to first-team All-WPIAL and All-State honors.
All three players were members of last year’s WPIAL championship and PIAA runner-up finish for North Allegheny.
Schmidt and Beck will both major in Physical Therapy at their respective universities. Tuman is undecided.
North Allegheny boys’ volleyball player Ryan Beck has tabbed Daemen College in Amherst, NY, to play collegiate volleyball. Daemen College is an NCAA Division II program in the East Coast Conference. The 2018-19 season will mark the first season for men’s volleyball at Daemen College. Daemen will become just the 27th Division II men’s volleyball program in the country.
Beck, who was a defensive specialist for the Tigers last season, was a member of NA’s 2017 squad that won a WPIAL championship and made a PIAA title game appearance. He was accepted into the Doctorate track for Physical Therapy at Daemen College.

Schmidt and Tuman were important contributors to North Allegheny’s run to a WPIAL championship and PIAA runner-up finish. The Tigers finished with a 22-1 overall record in 2017.
The North Allegheny boys’ volleyball team will open the season at home at the North Allegheny Invitational on March 24, 2018.
