Jon Hoover, Dylan Coy Win Titles At Winner’s Choice Tournament

North Allegheny crowned two champions at the Winner’s Choice Tournament in Fairmont, West Virginia on Saturday. Freshman Dylan Coy (106) and senior Jon Hoover (170) both won tournament gold to help the Tigers to a fourth-place finish with a team score of 164.50. WPIAL member Waynesburg claimed first place at the tournament with a score of 208.50.

In the 106-pound bracket, Coy earned four wins by fall before claiming a 2-0 decision in the title bout over Michael Dolan of Spring Mills (WV). At 170, Hoover bested two opponents by fall and two more by major decision for tournament gold. In the championship bout, Hoover defeated Moses Trueman of Oak Hill (WV) by a 10-0 major decision.

Two NA grapplers won bronze medals at the tournament, including junior Nick Marcenelle at 160 pounds and junior Ben Grafton at 220 pounds. Marcenelle picked up a 5-2 decision over Jake Smithson of Buckhannon Upsher in his third-place bout and Grafton earned a win by fall against Kellen Hunt of Cabell Midland (WV) to claim bronze.

In all, eight NA wrestlers medaled on the day. Other Tigers that medaled included junior Freddy Junko who placed fourth at 126 pounds, junior Ian Branstetter who finished in fifth place at 138 pounds, sophomore Brad Stipetich who placed fifth at 113 pounds and sophomore Brady Leczo who took sixth place at 152 pounds. North Allegheny, unbeaten in section action, will now turn its focus to undefeated Hampton for a Section 3B-AAA clash with the Talbots on Wednesday night. The home matchup will be broadcast live by the North Allegheny Sports Network.
