Lucia Wells Nets Hat Trick, Golden Goal To Beat Norwin, 3-2

A pair of WPIAL Class AAAA heavyweights did battle on Thursday night as the North Allegheny Tigers won a thriller at Norwin, 3-2, in overtime. Junior Lucia Wells scored all three goals for the Tigers, including the golden goal with 3:36 left in the extra session.

In a rematch of the 2019 WPIAL championship game and the 2020 WPIAL quarterfinals, the Tigers and Knights played to a scoreless tie after one half of play. The second half was a back-and-forth affair with each team trading goals over the final 40 minutes of regulation. Wells struck first just 5:22 into the half to give NA a 1-0 lead. Norwin answered on a goal by Paloma Swankler with 14:54 to play to even the score at 1-1.

With 9:14 remaining in regulation, Wells scored to put NA back on top, 2-1. The lead was short-lived, however, as Halle Holtzman tied the contest less than three minutes later at 2-2 to ultimately force overtime. Wells, who scored a game-winner to beat Norwin in the regular season last year, did it again with 3:36 left in the first overtime to propel the Tigers to a 3-2 victory.

The win keeps top-ranked North Allegheny undefeated on the season with a 14-0-1 record following the non-section win. Norwin falls to 11-3 on the campaign. The Tigers visit Upper St. Clair on Saturday before the section finale against Butler on Monday night.
