NA Caps Undefeated Regular Season, Blanks Butler, 2-0

Posted on:

In the regular season finale, the North Allegheny girls’ soccer team won its 10th in a row on Monday night with a 2-0 triumph over the Butler Golden Tornado at Newman Stadium. The victory caps an undefeated regular season for the Tigers and atones for an earlier tie with the Golden Tornado on Sept. 23.

In a rematch of last year’s WPIAL Class AAAA championship game, North Allegheny once again prevailed and came out strong in the first half. The Tigers peppered Golden Tornado goalie Mackenna Yaracs with a bevy of shot attempts and nearly struck for the game’s first goal on several occasions. Yaracs made three diving saves to keep NA off the board, and two additional defensive saves were made by Kat McGuire and Leah Deal denying the Tigers for much of the first half. Yaracs made 15 saves on the night.

North Allegheny’s relentless pressure eventually paid off when junior Lucia Wells put a shot on net that required another diving save by Yaracs. However, Yaracs was unable to control the rebound and sophomore Ally Ruiz pounced on the loose ball to give North Allegheny a 1-0 lead with 3:33 remaining in the first half. With 29 seconds left in the half, Ruiz set up junior Anna Bundy for a goal from the top of the 18 to increase the Tigers lead to 2-0. A sparkplug for the NA offense for most of the first half, Bundy was selected as the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

In the second half, the defense and senior goalie Megan Miller closed out North Allegheny’s 14th shutout of the season, extending the single-season program record. Over the last 28 section games, North Allegheny is 26-1-2 in that span.

North Allegheny jumps to 16-0-1 overall and 9-0-1 in Section 1-AAAA action. Butler falls to 12-2-2 overall and 6-2-2 in section play. The Tigers will await the release of the WPIAL playoff brackets on Wednesday afternoon.
