NA Boys Take 3rd Place At PIAA Championships

Sophomore Mason Gonzalez posted third-place finishes in two individual events and was part of freestyle relay teams that finished second and third respectively as the North Allegheny boys swimming and diving team took third place at the PIAA Class AAA Championships on March 16-17 at Bucknell University.  The NA boys finished with 205 points, two points behind second place Upper Dublin.  LaSalle College finished first with 252 points.

Gonzalez finished third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:37.91) and the 100-yard freestyle (44.52), and was part of the second-place 200-yard freestyle relay team, teaming with junior Eben Krigger, senior Daniel Songer and freshman Jack Wright to finish in 1:23.12.  Gonzalez also teamed with brother Max Gonzalez and Krigger and Wright to finish third in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a school-record time of 3:03.19.  Krigger posted a third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 4:27.96. The other finalists among the boys were the 200-yard medley relay team of Songer, Max Gonzalez and seniors Gage Halle and Colin MacDonald (fourth place); Max Gonzalez in the 200-yard individual medley (seventh place); Krigger in the 200-yard freestyle (fifth place); and Songer in the 50-yard freestyle (eighth place).

The NA girls finished their championship meet in fifth place with 127 points, behind winner North Penn, Pennridge, Mount Lebanon and Avon Grove, in that order.  Junior Lauren McGrath finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.27, and third in the 100-yard freestyle in 50.84. Other finalists among the girls were the 400-yard freestyle relay team of McGrath, seniors Gianna Caputo and Katie Wright and junior Aimee Verardi (fourth place); the girls’ 200-yard freestyle relay team of McGrath, Wright, Verardi and Anna Verardi (fourth place); and senior Erin Kuhn in the 100-yard breaststroke (seventh place).
