NA Defense Smothers Norwin For Shutout Win, 1-0

Posted on:

Sophomore Sofia Mianzo scored the game’s only goal in the third quarter to propel North Allegheny to a 1-0 win over the Norwin Knights in Section 1-AAA action. It’s the sixth straight game without a loss for North Allegheny, going 5-0-1 in that span. The shutout was the fifth in a row for sophomore goalie Jordan Ashbaugh and the North Allegheny defense.

The first half was primarily dictated by defense with few scoring chances for either team. With 6:12 to play in the first quarter, Norwin’s best opportunity came when senior forward Emma Mazur put a hard shot on net but Ashbaugh delivered a kick save to keep the game scoreless.

North Allegheny’s best chance of the half occurred with 1:30 to go in the second quarter as Mianzo feathered a pass into the circle that was deflected on net by senior Jordan Richards. However, Norwin goalie Elizabeth Long made the stop and the contest stayed scoreless at the half.

Early in the third quarter, North Allegheny came on strong with sustained pressure. The Tigers cashed in on that pressure with 10:15 to go in the third thanks to Mianzo’s goal, assisted by senior Maria Duchi, to give NA a 1-0 lead.

The Knights had few chances in the remaining minutes and were outshot by the Tigers, 5-2. North Allegheny led in the penalty corner category as well, 9-1. With the crisp passes of sophomore Lauren Kampi aiding the NA efforts on the corner and in field position, she was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

With the win, playoff-bound North Allegheny improves to 8-3-1 overall and 7-2-1 in Section 1-AAA. Norwin is eliminated from playoff contention and falls to 3-7 in the section. The Tigers will wind down the regular season schedule with a good playoff tune-up against the first-place Pine-Richland Rams.
