Facing off against the reigning champions out of the Pittsburgh City League, the North Allegheny boys’ basketball team traveled to Allderdice on Friday night and dropped a 79-62 decision in the 2022-23 season opener.

The Tigers went toe-to-toe with Dragons and were tied 13-13 after one quarter. NA received a trio of treys in the opening stanza, including two by junior Ty Iwanonkiw and another by fellow junior Joe Marquis to keep things close.

Iwanonkiw, who finished with a team-high 16 points, buried two more 3-pointers in the second quarter as the Tigers continued to light it up from beyond the arc. Junior Anthony Sciote knocked down two triples and junior Ben Lukitsch added another in the second period. However, the high-flying Dragons began to breath fire and were paced by junior guard Logan Golle with seven of his game-high 19 points coming in the second quarter, helping Allderdice to a 39-31 lead by halftime.

With four players ending the night in double figures, Allderdice methodically increased its lead in the second half and prevailed, 79-62. Senior center Antwone Ward-Thurman did most of his damage in the paint with 17 points, sophomore Jack Segall followed with 15 points off the bench and junior Major Rainey chipped in with 13 points.

Along with Iwanonkiw’s 16 points, Sciote notched double figures with 15 points and junior swing man Joey Dopirak totaled 12 points for the Tigers.

North Allegheny looks to bounce back from its season-opening loss with a visit to fourth-ranked Mt. Lebanon on Tuesday night. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in the south hills.
