NA Fends Off Fox Chapel, 45-35

The undefeated North Allegheny girls’ basketball team staved off the Fox Chapel Foxes on Friday night, 45-35, in Section 1-6A action. Trailing 31-25, the Tigers used a 9-0 run to take a 34-31 advantage by the end of the third quarter and led for the remainder of the night. Junior Lizzy Groetsch paced the Tigers with a game-high 20 points and was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game by the North Allegheny Sports Network.

In the first half, junior Domenica Delaney helped Fox Chapel build a 23-20 lead at intermission. Delaney netted all of her team-high 12 points in the first half and was the primary defender in guarding Groetsch.

While Delaney and the feisty Foxes held their own in the first 16 minutes, North Allegheny seized momentum late in the third quarter with a decisive 9-0 run that gave the Tigers a 34-31 lead after three quarters. In the fourth, NA outscored Fox Chapel 11-4 to lock down a 45-35 victory to remain unbeaten.

Along with Groetsch, the Tigers received outstanding guard play from freshman Jasmine Timmerson and sophomore Taylor Rawls. Timmerson and Rawls scored five and three points, respectively, and provided deft passing to set up their teammates for scoring opportunities. At forward, junior Paige Morningstar chipped in with eight points and posted numerous blocked shots defensively.

Following the win, North Allegheny improves to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in Section 1-6A. Fox Chapel slips to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the section. The Tigers return to action on Friday, Dec. 27 at the Wright Automotive Holiday Tournament with a home date against Altoona at 12:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live via the internet by the North Allegheny Sports Network.
