NA Remains Unbeaten With Senior Night Sweep

The North Allegheny swimming and diving teams remained undefeated on the season when they swept visiting West Allegheny on Senior Night on Thursday, February 5 at North Allegheny Senior High.  The girls won 95-83 as seniors Jacquelyn Du and Morgan Soulia set pool records in individual events, while the boys won 101-76.

Du’s pool record came in the 50-yard freestyle, which she won in 23.81.  Soulia’s pool record came in the 100-yard freestyle, which she won in 52.17.  Other first-place finishers in individual events for the girls were senior Charlie Brickner in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.79); sophomore Anna Verardi in the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.82); senior Kayla Churman in the 100-yard butterfly (58.97); junior Gianna Caputo in the 500-yard freestyle (5:18.26); sophomore Aimee Verardi in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.80); and junior Erin Kuhn in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.13).  Du teamed with fellow seniors Churman, Soulia and Maggie Root to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:46.55, and an all-senior team of Du, Root, Charlie Brickner and Clair Washabaugh won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:42.66.  Another all-senior team of Churman, Soulia, Brickner and Washabaugh won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:47.29.

For the boys, seniors Greg Arnold (50-yard freestyle; 22.42), Casey Melzer (100-yard freestyle; 49.29 and 100-yard breaststroke; 59.47) won individual events.  Other first-place finishers were sophomore Eben Krigger in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.37); sophomore Max Gonzalez in the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.91); freshman Mason Gonzalez in the 100-yard butterfly (53.95); junior Michael Struk in the 500-yard freestyle (5:01.66); and freshman Andrew Zhang in 100-yard backstroke (57.21).  An all-senior team of Arnold, Peter Neal, Jake Krivacs and Max Staresinic won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:45.42, while seniors Staresinic, Krivacs, Arnold and Melzer won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:30.11.  

In diving, seniors Andrew Doerfler and Jared Ziegler finished 1-2 in the boys’ 1-meter competition, while senior Julia Vespoli won the girls’ 1-meter with a score of 251.85. For a look at all of Thursday night’s results, click here.
