NA Rallies Past Penn-Trafford, 3-2
Fueled by two third period goals, the North Allegheny Ice Hockey Team rallied for a 3-2 win over the Section 3-AAA leading Penn-Trafford Warriors on Friday night at the BladeRunners complex in Warrendale. The win vaults NA back into first place in Section 2, one point ahead of rival Seneca Valley in the standings.
In a game pitting the top defensive team in Class AAA, North Allegheny, and the highest scoring team in the classification, Penn-Trafford, it was the Tigers who outshot the Warriors 35-20. However, it was Penn-Trafford who scored first on a Jordan Eisenstat goal 2:25 into the second period for a 1-0 lead. The Tigers evened the score at the 4:14 mark of the period on a tally by Christian Louria, but Penn-Trafford regained the lead when Jacob Miller found the back of the NA net just two minutes later to make the score to 2-1, Warriors.
Committing four penalties in the third period, the Warriors opened the door for an NA comeback. With 7:06 remaining in regulation, PT’s Jacob Graffius was whistled for a two minute interference penalty that proved costly. It took the Tigers just 17 seconds of the man advantage to strike as Nathan Taylor pushed a shot past PT goalie Eric Phelps, knotting the score at 2-2.
With 1:07 remaining in regulation, the Tigers broke through for their first lead of the night when Marty Hubert scored on a feed from Eric Sprys to put NA ahead for good, 3-2. Senior goalie Bradford Thornburgh earned the win for the Tigers, stopping 18 of 20 shots. Phelps made 32 saves for the Warriors in the loss.
With the win, North Allegheny jumps to 10-5-1 on the season. Penn-Trafford falls to 11-7-0 on the campaign. The Tigers take on the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils on Monday night. The game will be broadcast live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network. Faceoff is slated for 9:10 pm at the Mt. Lebanon Ice Arena.
