NA Secures 9th Straight Section Title, Outlasts No. 5 Norwin, 42-36

The North Allegheny girls’ basketball team rebounded from its first loss in over year with a hard-fought 42-36 victory at Norwin on Monday night. The win secured an outright Section 1-6A title. It’s the ninth straight year the Tigers have earned a section crown.

The Tigers built a 25-13 advantage by halftime and led by as much as 12 points in the third quarter, thanks in part to a pair of 3-pointers in the period by junior Emma Fischer.

Norwin staged a furious rally in the fourth quarter and cut the NA lead to 36-31 midway through the final stanza. The Tigers responded with a timely 3-pointer from sophomore Jasmine Timmerson and followed soon after with a bucket by senior Lizzy Groetsch to stretch the lead to 41-33 and finally put away the Knights.

Groetsch paced the Tigers with 12 points and senior Danielle Rosso led the Knights with 13 points, including three 3-pointers.

North Allegheny improves to 18-1 overall and 13-0 in Section 1-6A. Norwin falls to 11-4 overall and 9-3 in the section. The Tigers will wrap up section play with a visit to Shaler on Wednesday.
