NA Swim Team Sweeps Hampton

Freshman Ann Juneau and seniors Casey Melzer and Kayla Churman each won two individual events as the North Allegheny swimming and diving teams swept Hampton on Tuesday, January 27 at North Allegheny Senior High School.  The girls won 98-80 and the boys won 104-71 as both teams remained undefeated in Section 2 competition.

Churman won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.94 and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.21, while Juneau won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:13.37 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:10.19.  Other first place finishers among the NA girls were senior Maggie Root in the 50-yard freestyle (25.14); sophomore Anna Verardi in the 100-yard freestyle (55.63); and senior Jacquelyn Du in the 500-yard freestyle (5:46.45).  Du also teamed with freshman Kristine Mihm and juniors Erin Kuhn and Katie Wright to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:53.00, while Root and Juneau teamed with sophomores Lauren McGrath and Aimee Verardi to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:41.84.  Churman was joined by the Verardi sisters and junior Gianna Caputo on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team, which finished in 3:41.82.

For the boys, Melzer won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:03.65 and the 100-yard freestyle in 49.11.  Other first place finishers for the boys were senior Max Staresinic in the 50-yard freestyle (23:45); sophomore Max Gonzalez in the 100-yard butterfly (55.36); freshman Mason Gonzalez in the 500-yard freestyle (5:02.04); freshman Andrew Zhang in the 100-yard backstroke and junior Gage Halle in the 100-yard breaststroke.  Melzer teamed with seniors Greg Arnold and Andrew Lehman and junior Colin MacDonald to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:40.13, and MacDonald also was part of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team, teaming with Max Gonzalez, sophomore Eben Krigger and junior Michael Struk to win in 1:32.70.  Mason Gonzalez teamed with sophomore Tom McCaffrey, junior Dan Songer and senior Dan Meehan to win the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:28.27.

In diving, senior Andrew Doerfler, junior Stephen Savchik and senior Jared Ziegler finished 1-2-3 for the boys, while sophomore Madeline Mianzo and junior Gwen Lindberg finished second and third respectively for the girls. For a look at a full list of results of the meet with Hampton, click here.
