NA Teams Lead After Day 1 of WPIAL Championships

Sophomore Mason Gonzalez won the 200-yard freestyle and was part of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team as the North Allegheny swimming and diving teams both finished Day 1  in first place at the WPIAL championships being held at Joe C. Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh.  The NA boys led second-place Mount Lebanon 248-186, and Upper St. Clair was in third place with 145 points.   The NA girls led second-place Mount Lebanon 219 to 189.5, with Upper St. Clair in third place with 148 points.

Gonzalez, who finished the 200-yard freestyle in 1:39.41, led an NA sweep as junior Eben Krigger and freshman Jack Wright finished second and third respectively.  Gonzalez then teamed with brother Max Gonzalez and Krigger and Wright to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:24.20.  The boys 200-yard medley relay team of Max Gonzalez and seniors Daniel Songer, Gage Halle and Colin MacDonald finished second, as did Songer individually in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.24.

Among the girls, senior Katie Wright finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (23.86).  Junior Lauren McGrath finished third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.42), while senior Gianna Caputo finished third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.27), and senior Erin Kuhn finished third in the 100-yard butterfly (57.57).  Wright and McGrath teamed with juniors Aimee and Anna Verardi to finished second in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The NA girls have won seven straight WPIAL championships and eight in the last 12 years. The NA boys have won four straight and nine in the last 10 years.
