NA’s Winning Streak Snapped at 30 by Trinity, 59-56

North Allegheny’s 30-game winning streak was snapped on Saturday afternoon with a narrow 59-56 loss at Trinity in non-section play. The Hillers, winners of 10 in a row themselves, have snapped the two longest winning streaks in the WPIAL this season. On Jan. 23, Trinity also ended Chartiers Valley’s state record 64-game consecutive win streak.

In a battle between the top-ranked teams in Class 6A and Class 5A, respectively, the Hillers got off to a fast start on their home floor and built a 33-23 lead by halftime thanks to the hot shooting of Alyssa Clutter. Clutter poured in three 3-pointers in the first half and finished with a game-high 21 points.

North Allegheny answered back in the third quarter and took a 42-41 lead. The Tigers were sparked by senior forward Paige Morningstar, who scored 12 of her team-best 17 points in the third period, including two treys. Senior guard Lizzy Groetsch joined Morningstar in double figures with 13 points.

In the final stanza, Clutter regained her shooting touch from the perimeter with a pair of 3-pointers and Courtney Dahlquist, who netted 17 points, went a perfect 4-for-4 at the free-throw line to help Trinity prevail, 59-56.

The loss drops North Allegheny’s overall record to 17-1 overall. Trinity improves to 14-1 on the season with its only loss coming to Norwin on Jan. 16. The Tigers next opponent will be Knights of Norwin on Monday at 7:30 p.m. on the road.
