North Allegheny Wins Section Opener At Fox Chapel, 57-41

Leading by five after three quarters, the North Allegheny girls’ basketball team used a strong fourth quarter to pull away from the host Fox Chapel Foxes for a 57-41 victory in the Section 1-6A opener on Monday night. The Tigers outscored the Foxes, 21-10, in the final stanza for their 19th straight section win.

Now members of the same section after realignment, Monday’s game was the first meeting between the two teams since Dec. 13, 2010. In that game, NA claimed the win by a 57-33 decision with Alexis Aiken scoring a team-best 13 points.

In Monday’s contest, North Allegheny was paced by sophomore Lizzy Groetsch, who tallied a team-high 16 points. Seniors Rachel Martindale and Brynn Serbin also touched double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Claire Fenton led Fox Chapel with a game-high 19 points.

North Allegheny improves to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in section play. Fox Chapel dips to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the section. The Lady Tigers will visit Shaler on Thursday night in another road section matchup.
