Peters Township Upends NA In PIHL Semifinals
The Peters Township Indians advanced to the Class AAA title game with a 7-0 win over the North Allegheny Tigers in the PIHL semifinals. The sixth-seeded Indians will face the top-seeded Central Catholic Vikings in the championship game next Wednesday at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex at 8:30 p.m. The Vikings defeated Seneca Valley in overtime, 5-4, in their semifinal contest.
The Tigers went 1-0-1 in their two meetings against Peters Township in the regular season but the Indians played near-flawless hockey in this playoff contest and stormed out of the gates to take a 2-0 lead. Cal Raymore scored the first goal of the night on a power play at the 7:04 mark of the first period. Less than two minutes later, Steve Rex scored a short-handed goal with a steal from behind the Tigers’ net and a bank-in shot off the body of the NA goaltender for a 2-0 advantage.
North Allegheny settled into the game and came close to cracking the scoreboard in the second period but the Peters Township defense and goalie Alex Wilbert held the Tigers scoreless. Wilbert made 23 saves en route to the shutout.
Peters Township took command of the game with two goals in the final minute of the second period. Jeremy Anthos scored with 48 seconds remaining in the period and Connor Gielarowski added another just 13 seconds later to give the Indians a 4-0 lead heading into the third period. In the final stanza, the Indians closed out the scoring with goals by Anthos, Gielarowski and Will Barnes.
Despite a frustrating conclusion to the 2016-17 season, the North Allegheny ice hockey team posted a fabulous 13-win regular season and third straight trip to the PIHL semifinals. For their efforts throughout the season, and their careers, the North Allegheny senior contingent of Benjamin Mariner, Erik Chidester, Dawson Richard, Steven Dietz, Bernardo Vieira, Cameron Zahn, John Parks, Cameron Sunseri and Tyler Wilson were named the Wright Automotive Players of the Game. Congratulations to the Tigers players and coaches for a terrific season.
