Sewickley Academy Denies Inspired Effort From Tigers, 9-6

Posted on:

Still searching for its first win of the season, North Allegheny played inspired and determined lacrosse on Tuesday night but ultimately fell to the Sewickley Academy Panthers, 9-6.   The Tigers scratched and clawed with the Panthers and trailed by just one goal with 11:11 to play.  However, Sewickley sophomore Natalie Wei scored three straight goals to put North Allegheny away. Wei netted a game-high four goals as the Panthers captured their eighth consecutive win against the Tigers.

The Tigers trailed 1-0 to open the game but tied the contest with 12:49 remaining in the half on a remarkable goal by freshman Marissa Lambert.  Lambert, who netted a hat trick in her previous meeting with Sewickley on April 9, weaved through the Panthers coast to coast and scored on a wrap-around goal to even the score at 1-1.  For her efforts on the night, Lambert was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

Back-to-back goals by Cara Dietrich gave Sewickley Academy the lead back at 3-1 and the Panthers held a 4-2 advantage early in the second half.  North Allegheny again stormed back to tie the game with goals by Gina Sirianni and Lambert to make it a 4-4 contest.

Despite tying the game twice, the Tigers couldn’t quite get over the hump and fell behind on Dietrich’s third goal of the night with 14:32 remaining in the game.  Sewickley’s lead swelled to 6-4 before NA appeared to be headed on the comeback trail again.  Junior Courtney Heinl caught a pass in traffic and released a quick shot in front of the SA net to trim the score to 6-5 with 11:11 left to play.  Then Wei denied the Tigers’ hopes of rallying back with three straight goals to put the game out of reach.

Sewickley sits at 2-12 overall with the win and 2-9 in Division 1, Section 2.  North Allegheny remains winless at 0-18 and 0-11 in section play. The Lady Tigers host Pine-Richland on Thursday night at Newman Stadium.  Opening draw is set for 7:30 pm.
