Six Tigers Continue Into Final Day Of WPIAL Tournament

North Allegheny senior Zach Smith pinned Latrobe’s Travis Schmeling in 53 seconds to advance to the semifinals at the WPIAL Individual Wrestling Tournament.  Smith’s Friday night victory at 195 pounds sends him on to the semis to face Kiski Area’s Chad Kuhn.  Smith owns a season record of 42-4, while Kuhn is 32-4 on the year.

Jake Hinkson (132) and Jake Woodley (170) were cut down in quarterfinal defeats but remain alive in the consolation bracket.  Taking part in the first round of the consolations on Friday were Zach Stedeford (113), Sean Kalmeyer (145) and Sean Hoover (152) who all earned victories.  Stedeford (in photo above) pinned Gino Silvat of Montour at 3:38 of the bout, Kalmeyer earned a 6-2 decision over Butler’s Donovan Malovich, and Hoover picked up a 3-1 decision over Ron D’Amico of Shaler.

All six North Allegheny wrestlers will continue into the final day of the WPIAL Individual Wrestling tournament beginning this morning at 10:00.  The consolations finals begin at 6:00 pm and are followed by the championship finals at 7:30 pm. For updated Class AAA brackets, click here.
