Taylor Lake’s Double-Double Lifts NA Past Oakland Catholic, 78-64

The North Allegheny girls’ basketball team made its return home after spending last week at the Naples Holiday Shootout in Florida and topped the Oakland Catholic Eagles on Monday night, 78-64. The Lady Tigers led wire to wire and had five players finish in double figures. Senior Taylor Lake paced NA with a double-double, collecting 16 points and 14 rebounds to earn Wright Automotive Player of the Game honors.

To its credit, underdog Oakland Catholic stayed with North Allegheny in the first half with an up-tempo transition game. The Eagles flew on the wing of junior Gabby Gevaudan who was strong near the cylinder and scored 13 first-half points on her way to a 17 point performance. Oakland Catholic’s transition game ran out of gas in the second quarter, however, and the Tigers took a 42-33 lead into the locker room when Lake hit a buzzer-beater 3-pointer to end the first half.

Oakland Catholic was no match for North Allegheny’s inside presence as the Tigers won the battle of the boards, 42-27. The Tigers’ ownership of the glass helped NA pull away in the second half to stay perfect in Section 3-AAAA action. Along with Lake’s 16 points, Abby Gonzales netted 15 points, Hailey Zeise totaled 12 points, and Piper Morningstar and Zakaria Karanikos scored 11 points apiece.

With the win, North Allegheny jumps to 9-3 overall and 4-0 in section play. Oakland Catholic slips to 3-7 overall and 0-5 in section play. The Lady Tigers visit the Seneca Valley Raiders on Thursday night in another section affair.
