Tigers Beat Birmingham, Powell Nets Game Winner In OT
Sophomore Wes Powell scored four goals, including the game winner in double overtime, to lift North Allegheny to a 10-9 win over Birmingham (MI) at the MSCLA Tournament on Saturday.
Birmingham built leads of 3-1 and 4-2 in the first half before the Tigers roared back on goals by Ben Maenza and Powell, to even the score by halftime at 4-4. The two teams traded punches in the second half with NA grabbing a 9-8 lead with 5:09 to play thanks to a goal by junior Trevor Saundry. Birmingham tied the game with 1:59 remaining in regulation but Powell’s heroics in double overtime sent the Tigers home happy for the weekend.
Helping pace the NA offense in the win were Saundry and Gavin Hagen who scored two goals apiece. Trevor Perry scored a big goal early in the game and added four ground balls. Jack Kairys had a gritty performance with eight ground balls and two forced errors. Greg Ferringer delivered eight forced errors and five ground balls. Faceoff man Alec Vissotski won 17 of 23 draws to keep NA in control of possession.
With the non-section win, North Allegheny improves to 9-7 overall. The Tigers will return to section play with a big game against Pine-Richland on the road on Wednesday night.
