Tigers Continue Swimming Dominance With Two WPIAL Titles

The North Allegheny swimming and diving teams swept the WPIAL Class AAA team championships for the fourth straight season over the weekend at the University of Pittsburgh, with the girls easily winning by 296 points over second-place Upper St. Clair while the boys won by 53 points, also over Upper St. Clair.  The girls won the team championship for the seventh straight season and eighth time in 12 years.  The boys have won the title nine out of the last 10 years.

Individual champions for the girls were sophomore Lauren McGrath in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.80); senior Jacquelyn Du in the 50-yard freestyle (23.26) and 100-yard backstroke (53.59); senior Kayla Churman in the 100-yard butterfly (55.54); senior Morgan Soulia in the 100-yard freestyle (50.75); and freshman Ann Juneau in the 100-yard breaststroke.  Senior Maggie Root finished second in the 100-yard butterfly, while junior Gianna Caputo finished second in the 500-yard freestyle, as did junior Erin Kuhn in the 100-yard breaststroke.  Soulia also finished second in the 200-yard freestyle, as did Juneau in 200-yard individual medley.  Junior Katie Wright finished third in the 50-yard freestyle, as did McGrath in the 100-yard freestyle and senior Charlie Brickner in the 100-yard backstroke.

The girls also swept the relays, with Du, Kuhn, Churman and Root teaming to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:42.56, while Du, Soulia, McGrath and Wright won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:33.76.  The 400-yard freestyle relay team of McGrath, Caputo, Brickner and Soulia closed the girls’ meet by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:27.30.

Among the boys, senior Casey Melzer successfully defended his 100-yard breaststroke title, winning in 56.26.  He also finished second in the 200-yard individual medley.  Freshman Mason Gonzalez finished second in the 200-yard freestyle and third in the 100-yard freestyle, while sophomore Eben Krigger finished third in the 200-yard freestyle.  Senior Greg Arnold finished third in the 100-yard backstroke.

North Allegheny swimmers and divers will next be in action at the PIAA championships at Bucknell University, beginning on March 13.
