Tigers Devour Big Macs In Non-Section Showdown, 4-1
The Canon-McMillan Big Macs entered Saturday’s game with North Allegheny ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the Trib Live and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette polls, respectively. In an early season non-section showdown in Class 6A, the third-ranked Tigers dealt the Big Macs their first loss of the season with a 4-1 decision at Wild Things Park in Washington, PA.
With the game tied 1-1 in the top of the sixth, senior Ben Surman gave the Tigers the lead with a two-out RBI single that scored senior Juliano Capretta for a 2-1 advantage. The RBI was Surman’s second of the evening.
The Tigers tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh courtesy of a two-RBI triple by senior Colin Cain that plated Turner White and Luke Trueman to improve the NA lead to 4-1. The Tigers capitalized on an erratic showing from University of Michigan recruit Cam Weston for all three late-inning runs. Weston struck out six but also walked five batters in three innings of work and suffered the loss.
In the bottom of the seventh, Trueman preserved the victory for the Tigers with a scoreless bottom of the seventh. Trueman went 1.2 innings for his first save of the season.
North Allegheny starter Anthony Hattrup (1-0) picked up the victory, limiting the Big Macs to two hits and one unearned run in 5.1 innings on the bump.
With the win, North Allegheny improves to 2-0 on the season. Canon-McMillan slides to 3-1 on the campaign. The Tigers will take on the fifth-ranked Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils in another non-section game on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
