Tigers Rise Above Raiders, 3-0

The North Allegheny girls’ volleyball team came another step closer to winning a Section 1-AAAA title on Tuesday evening with a 3-0 sweep of Seneca Valley. The Tigers earned the win by set scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-23. NA needs only to beat Pine-Richland on Thursday for an outright section championship.

Against the Raiders, the Tigers opened up a 17-7 lead in the first set behind the play of senior Maddi Curran and junior Paige Morningstar. Curran and Morningstar combined for four kills and three aces as NA prevailed, 25-17. Seneca Valley’s Sarah White totaled five kills in the set on her way to nine on the night.

Thanks in part to White, Seneca Valley stayed with North Allegheny midway through the second set, trailing only 16-14. However, the Tigers regained control and scored nine of the final 12 points to claim a 25-17 win. Curran blistered the Raiders with five kills and tallied a game-high eight kills and three aces to earn Wright Automotive Player of the Game honors.

In the third set, Seneca Valley rallied from a 16-10 deficit to grab a 23-22 lead late in the set. NA senior Abby Miller turned the tide with an accurate cross-court kill and an ace. With the Raiders on the ropes, junior Paige Miller closed out the victory with a block to propel the Tigers to a 25-23 victory and a 3-0 sweep.

Also contributing to the NA win was senior Malia Duffy with 12 digs on defense. Abby Miller totaled 12 digs, 11 assists, seven kills and made numerous acrobatic plays on the evening. Senior Hannah Phillips and Paige Miller notched seven kills each. Morningstar distributed a team-high 19 assists.

The win was North Allegheny’s 62nd in a row and eighth straight against the Seneca Valley. The Tigers improve to 15-0 overall and 11-0 in Section 1-AAAA. The Raiders dip to 6-5 in section play. North Allegheny will try to cement an outright section crown on Thursday night against Pine-Richland. The contest will be broadcast live via the internet by the North Allegheny Sports Network.
