Tigers Score Four Unanswered Goals To Sink Shaler, 5-1
Thanks to a four goal outburst in the second half, the North Allegheny Tigers shredded the Shaler Titans on Wednesday night, 5-1, in a Section 2-AAA contest. Dominating the opening half, the Lady Tigers held Shaler without a shot on net and took the lead in the 39th minute on a corner kick served in by senior Ryleigh Gapczynsky. Senior forward Lauren Briggs redirected Gapczynsky’s corner kick past the Shaler keeper for a 1-0 Tigers lead.
Shaler got even in the 9th minute of the second half on a fine individual effort by Megan Schwartz, who dribbled from midfield past the NA defense and scored to tie the game at 1-1. Shaler’s momentum was brief as the Tigers bombarded the Titans’ net with a bevy of shots and scored four goals within a 15 minute span, beginning with a marker by Alexa Mermigas in the half’s 24th minute. Mermigas’ goal gave NA a 2-1 lead and was set up on an outstanding pass by junior Savana Yurick.
Following the Mermigas goal, the Tigers rattled off three more in quick succession with Megan Van Kirk netting two goals, sandwiched around another Mermigas tally. The onslaught gave North Allegheny decided momentum and a 5-1 section victory. The North Allegheny defense limited Shaler to only two shots on net for the night.
North Allegheny now holds an 11-0 overall record and 7-0 mark in Section 2. Shaler falls to 3-7 overall and 1-6 in section play. The Lady Tigers host Pine-Richland at Newman Stadium on Saturday night.
