The North Allegheny Tigers defeated the Section 3-5A section champs, the Shaler Area Titans, on Thursday afternoon by a final score of 7-3.

Although the Tigers’ offense threatened early in the game, NA went into the sixth inning down 2-0. Senior Kendall Trunzo and junior Alaina Whipkey hit back-to-back home runs to start the inning, tying the game at 2-2. Whipkey’s home run was her ninth of the season, leaving her tied with Sam Goettman for the school record for the most home runs hit in a single season. Goettmann, a North Allegheny Hall of Famer, also hit nine home runs in 2005.

Other offensive standouts include sophomore Meghan McDonough, who went 3 for 4, as well as senior Lauren Haywood, sophomore Annalyn Isaacs, and freshman Caitlin Logan who all drove in a run a piece.

Freshman pitcher Anne Melle threw seven complete innings, allowing five hits while striking out two. The Tigers will host the North Hills Indians tomorrow night at 7:00pm for a non-section contest.
