Undefeated Norwin Tops Tigers

The North Allegheny girls’ soccer team gave a spirited effort on Monday night against top-ranked and undefeated Norwin but dropped a 4-1 decision on the road. Norwin, the reigning WPIAL champion, had its hands full with North Allegheny in the early going and the Tigers almost took the lead just three minutes into the game. Freshman Ava Ruppersberger crossed to Emma Bundy who set up Morgan Anderson with a pass and Anderson’s shot rung off the post and out, keeping the game scoreless.

Following NA’s initial surge, Norwin continued to have trouble generating offense as the game was played mostly in the midfield for the first 15 minutes. The Knights managed to create a bit more offense and two corner kick opportunities before halftime but the game stayed tied, 0-0, going into intermission.

In the second half, the Knights took a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute on a Kelly Kingerski goal off a rebound that ricocheted off the crossbar. Despite the one-goal deficit, the Tigers continued to press Norwin and nearly had a chance when it appeared Ruppersberger was taken down in the box but no penalty was granted.

Norwin took advantage of an NA turnover in the defensive end and turned it into a goal courtesy of junior Emily Harrigan who found the far side netting to give the Knights a 2-0 lead. Norwin scored again in the 63rd minute on a Kendyl Krantiz marker for a 3-0 advantage. Senior Lexie Kolano added on to the Knights lead with a goal in the 73rd minute for a 4-0 score. The Tigers broke the shutout in the 80th minute on a goal by Bundy to bring the final score to 4-1, Norwin.

North Allegheny slips to 7-9-1 with the non-section loss. Norwin remains undefeated with a 16-0-1 record. The Lady Tigers will conclude the 2016 season with a visit to Mars on Wednesday night.
