On Senior Night, the North Allegheny Tigers won their third consecutive game with a 53-25 non-conference triumph over the Norwin Knights at Newman Stadium on Friday night. It’s the fifth time this season the Tigers have won by mercy rule and third time NA has scored 50 points or more.

North Allegheny asserted its dominance from the very start as senior Khiryn Boyd returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown for an instant 6-0 lead. Senior Evan Lyon tossed a 2-point conversion pass to fellow senior Logan Kushner to give the Tigers an 8-0 advantage.

After a three-and-out by Norwin, North Allegheny quickly added on to the lead. Kushner opened the next NA possession with a 39-yard pass to Boyd to the Norwin 20-yard line, and Kushner with a 13-yard run on the next snap. On the third play of the possession, Boyd toted the football in from 7 yards out for a 14-0 lead with 9:54 left in the first quarter. Kushner tossed a 2-point conversion pass to Boyd to extend the lead to 16-0 lead. With two total touchdowns, Boyd was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

The NA swelled to 23-0 when senior running back Tyree Alualu raced 54 yards for a touchdown with 6:49 remaining in the first quarter.

A penalty-aided drive allowed Norwin to crack the scoreboard when sophomore quarterback Tristyn Tavares hit Luke Denny with a 4-yard touchdown pass on a 4th and goal, cutting the NA lead to 23-6 with 3:51 to go in the opening stanza.

The Tigers answered back just 14 seconds later with a 63-yard touchdown pass by Kushner to tight end Daniel Sellers for a 30-6 advantage. Following an interception by Lyon, his third of the season, North Allegheny tacked on another touchdown on a 7-yard scoring run by Kushner with 2:39 to go in the first period and the Tigers lead ballooned to 37-6. Kushner went 3-for-7 on the night with 131 yards passing and two touchdown passes, adding another 71 yards on the ground and one rushing score.

On the first play of the second quarter, Kushner hit Boyd with 29-yard pass completion and the NA wideout seemed poised for another touchdown. However, Boyd fumbled the ball before crossing the goal line. Fortunately for the Tigers, Lyon alertly fell on the ball in the end zone for another touchdown and NA led, 44-6.

Refusing to go down quietly, Taveres heaved a 57-yard touchdown pass to Denny with 6:51 left in the second quarter to trim the NA lead to 44-12. The Tigers responded with an 11-yard touchdown run by Liam Flaherty for a 50-12 lead with 3:47 left before intermission. Norwin struck one more time before the half on a perfectly thrown 32-yard scoring strike to Denny, cutting the NA advantage to 50-18 with 1:15 on the clock. Taveres finished with 261 yards passing and three touchdowns, while Denny caught 11 passes for 238 yards and reeled in all three scoring passes.

In the third quarter, North Allegheny invoked the mercy rule thanks to a 31-yard field goal by junior kicker Peter Notaro and the Tigers lead reached 35 points at 53-18 with 4:58 left in the third quarter.

Norwin capped the scoring 12 seconds into fourth quarter when Cristian Shogan scampered into the end zone on a 9-yard touchdown run to bring the final score to 53-25, Tigers.

With the non-conference win, North Allegheny improves to 7-1 overall, while Norwin slips to 2-6. The Tigers will visit Penn-Trafford next for another non-conference contest.
