NA Earns First Win of Season, 2-1 over Fox Chapel
by: Bob Orkwis
After dropping their season opener to State College, North Allegheny was looking to rebound against Fox Chapel.
The Tigers did just that, evening their season record at (1-1) after knocking off Fox Chapel 2-1 at Newman Stadium.
Senior Ryann Snowden opened the scoring at 7:09 of the first quarter, when she found a rebound during a penalty corner sequence for her first goal of the season to put the Tigers in front.
Fox Chapel had a big answer in the second quarter, dominating the possession and getting several quality scoring chances, but Northwestern commit Kayla Joyce and the Tigers defense withstood the pressure to take a 1-0 into halftime.
The score stayed the same until the Tigers added their second goal just over six minutes into the fourth quarter.
After another penalty corner sequence, Josie Schomberg was able to find the ball and her ensuing pass found senior Mia Brinkley open at the near post, and the returning 3A All-Star forward found the net for her first goal of the season and a 2-0 North Allegheny lead.
Fox Chapel was able to generate a couple of offensive chances late, and junior Emma Srodes was able to break the shutout with :25 left to make the final score 2-1.
By notching the game winning goal, Brinkley also notched the first Wright Automotive Player of the Game honor of the season in the victory.
The Tigers are off until next Wednesday, when they open play by hosting their 3A section opener against Mt. Lebanon.
That game starting at 7:30 p.m. will be broadcast live of the North Allegheny Sports Network.
