Big Second Half leads to 42-14 win over Hempfield

North Allegheny used great defense and the run game came to life as the Tigers used a 28-0 second half to come away with a 42-14 win over Hempfield in the conference opener Friday night at Spartan Stadium.

Things started great for the Tigers as the defense forced a punt on the opening possession. NA’s offense drove right down the field, which ended with a Brady Brinkley pass to Colman Craft for the opening score. This was the first game back for Craft who missed two game with an injury. On the next drive, North Allegheny’s defense played takeaway when Hempfield’s running back fumbled the ball giving the Tigers great field position. NA was unable to take advantage of the opportunity and turned the ball over as the quarter came to a close.

Hempfield got on the board early in the second quarter to make the score 7-6. The next possession, the Tigers drove the ball into Hempfield territory but the drive stalled out and the Spartans got the ball back with a chance to take the lead. NA’s defense came up big again, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Dylan Langdon and the Tigers had great field position from the 30-yard line. This time, North Allegheny cashed in when Jackson Failla scored from one yard out and the Tigers led 14-6. Late in the second quarter, Hempfield found the end zone again and scored on a two-point conversion as the Spartans tied the game after one half.

NA came out of the locker room with more focus in the second half and both lines started to take over. After the teams exchanged punts, North Allegheny looked to Luke Rohan to carry the offense. He came through getting into the end zone to give NA the lead back at 21-14.

Rohan found the end zone again three minutes into the fourth quarter to give North Allegheny the 28-14 lead. With Hempfield getting desperate, they tried to throw a deep pass down the middle of the field that was tipped by Nicholas Humphries and intercepted by Conner Frank. It was Rohan once again that scored his third touchdown of the second half and NA was rolling with a 35-14 lead. James Donaldson got an interception on the next drive and Dylan Brokos scored to put the nail in the coffin. Logan Hughey got an interception on the ensuing drive and all North Allegheny had to do was kneel the clock out and leave Hempfield with a 42-14 win.

With his great second-half performance and three touchdowns, Rohan was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

North Allegheny improves to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Hempfield falls to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference. The Tigers return home next Friday when they take on Norwin at 7:30 p.m. at Newman Stadium in another conference matchup. This game will be broadcast on the NA Sports Network.
