Lady Tigers Finish Season With Narrow Loss

The Mars Planets scored on a first-half penalty kick and held on for a 1-0 victory over the North Allegheny girls’ soccer team in the season finale on Wednesday night. The Planets managed only two shots on the game but were able to outlast the Tigers for the win.

The game began as a stalemate in the first 10 minutes of the game, but Mars was awarded a penalty kick when a North Allegheny defender took down a Planets player in the box. Kaitlyn Mackenzie converted on the penalty kick to give Mars a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers mustered few scoring chances in the first half but turned up the pressure in the second half. In the 48th minute, junior Morgan Anderson broke through the defense for an open shot but her attempt went wide to keep the score at 1-0, Mars. North Allegheny was awarded a free kick in the 64th minute but the Tigers’ attempt missed just wide. The Tigers picked up another scoring chance in the 74th minute but senior Brooke Anderson narrowly missed tying the game with a shot that went over the crossbar. Despite NA’s continues pressure in the second half, Mars survived for a 1-0 win.

North Allegheny ends the season with a 7-10-1 record following the non-section loss. Mars, the co-section champion from Section 1-AAA, wraps up the regular season with an 11-2-2 mark. Congratulations to the Lady Tigers for a hard-fought effort during the 2016 season.
