Lady Tigers In Pole Position After Day One of WPIAL Championships, NA Boys Sit In 2nd Place

After Day One of the WPIAL Class AAA Swimming and Diving Championships at Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh, the Lady Tigers from North Allegheny are the pacesetters with a team score of 212 and the NA boys are in second place with a score of 124. The NA girls are 38 points ahead of second-place Fox Chapel, while the NA boys trail first-place Seneca Valley by 55.5 points.

Seeking a 14th consecutive WPIAL title, the Lady Tigers got off to a great start with a pair of gold medals on the day. In the 200 Free Relay, the quartet of junior Lexi Sundgren, sophomore Natalie Sens, junior Rebecca Melanson and junior Delaney Kennedy clocked in with a time of 1:35.36 to win WPIAL gold. Individually, Sundgren also took first place in the 200 Free with a time of 1:49.00.

Other medal winners for the NA girls’ team included sophomore Greta Mott, senior Isabella Dietz, Sens and Melanson who won WPIAL silver in the 200 Medley Relay. The top performances for the NA boys’ team were provided in the 200 Free and 200 Free Relay. Junior Zachary Jubeck took fourth place in the 200 Free with a time of 1:43.27, while the team of sophomore William Gao, junior Ben Gavran, junior Eliot Maravich and senior Stewart Messer claimed fourth place in the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:26.97. Providing a point boost for the Tigers in the 50 Free was Gavran with a fifth-place finish, while Gao took sixth-place finish in the 200 IM and Jubeck claimed sixth-place in the 100 Butterfly. Day two of competition at the WPIAL championships will begin at 8:30 am on Friday at Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh.
