Lady Tigers Top Mercyhurst Prep, 6-1

Posted on:

Thanks a weather postponement earlier in the week, North Allegheny had to wait a couple extra days but the Lady Tigers conquered Mercyhurst Prep on Friday night, 6-1, at Newman Stadium. The Tigers used first half goals from senior Alexa Mermigas and junior Monica Pike to take a 2-1 lead into intermission.

In the second half, North Allegheny dominated possession and scoring chances to take control of the game. The Tigers peppered the Mercyhurst goalie with three quick goals to grab a 5-1 advantage. Sophomore Amanda Miller passed to junior Emily Lyon for a chip-in goal in the half’s 3rd minute for a 3-1 NA lead. Lyon scored again just two minutes later on a shot she buried in the upper corner of the net to make the score 4-1, Tigers. Another minute later, Mermigas added her second goal of the game cashing in on a loose rebound to increase the lead to 5-1, NA.  North Allegheny capped the scoring later in the game on a marker by sophomore Marina Thornton to bring the final score to 6-1.

Lady Tigers’ goalie Madison Martin was barely tested in the second half as Mercyhurst Prep managed just two shots on net. North Allegheny finished well on scoring opportunities and showed great combination play in the attacking zone for a sound victory.

North Allegheny improves to 5-0 overall with the non-section win.  The Lady Tigers will have another non-section contest today when they face Franklin Regional at noon at the Hampton Invitational.
