NA claims second straight section title with 44-24 win over Butler
North Allegheny traveled to Butler High School for a massive Section 4-3A matchup on Wednesday night. Both teams came into the match 3-0 in the section, meaning the winner would be the section champion. North Allegheny retained the crown clinching their second straight title with a 44-24 win over the Golden Tornado.
Butler got the scoring going with a win at 107 to take the 3-0 lead. Charlie LaQuatra won by fall to give the Tigers a 6-3 lead. Evan Schomburg won by forfeit but Butler won the next two bouts to tie the score 12-12. The match swung when the Tigers ripped off four straight wins as Gus Stedeford (pin), Brody Magorian (pin), Griffen Reid (major decision) and Kelly Buggey (major decision) opened up the NA lead to 32-12. Butler had pins in their next two bouts to make the score 32-24, but Mason Hartung and Bradyn McConneha both won by fall to give North Allegheny the 44-24 win and the section title.
Reid was named the Wright Automotive Wrestler of the Match for his dominant 11-1 victory at 152 lbs with the match still in the balance.
North Allegheny improves to 14-2 overall and finishes section play with a 4-0 record. Butler falls to 4-1 overall and ends the section schedule with a 3-1 record. The Tigers now await their fate to see where they will be placed in the WPIAL Team Tournament. The first round and quarterfinals will be held next Wednesday, January 29.
