NA dominates McKeesport in opener
North Allegheny hosted the McKeesport Tigers on Saturday night at UPMC Court as a part of the NA/Wright Automotive Tip-Off Tournament. NA used a strong first half along with a massive third quarter to run away from McKeesport by a final score of 55-29. The win was head coach Gabby Baldasare’s 20th of her career and her first with North Allegheny.
With both teams having a lot of turnover from their rosters a year ago, it was a slow start to the game on either side. As the quarter went on, Vange Balouris and Rosalia Varlotta sparked the team and they led 19-12 after a quarter of play. Defense prevailed in the second quarter for both teams but NA was able to expand the lead to double digits as they led 33-20 at the half.
The third quarter is really where North Allegheny got the defense going as they forced numerous turnovers in the quarter and outscored McKeesport 20-3 to expand the lead to 30 going into the fourth quarter with the score 53-23. With the running clock invoked because of the 30-point lead, NA coasted the rest of the way to a 55-29 victory to open the season.
Varlotta finished with 17 points. For leading the team in scoring, and getting the offense going when she came off the bench, she was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game. Balouris had 13 points while Natalie Kinross added nine points.
Emily Eisenberg led McKeesport with 11 points.
North Allegheny improves to 1-0 on the young season while McKeesport falls to 0-1. NA will play their second game in the NA/Wright Automotive Tip-Off Tournament tomorrow when they take on Altoona at 3 p.m. at UPMC Court. This game will be broadcast live on the North Allegheny Sports Network.
