Strong Third Period Lifts NA Over Canon-McMillan, 5-3
North Allegheny broke a 3-3 tie with two unanswered goals in the third period for a 5-3 victory over the Canon-McMillan Big Macs at the Iceoplex on Thursday night. Matthew Morrison scored the game-winning goal 4:02 into third period to give NA a 4-3 lead. Senior John Parks put the game on ice with an empty-net goal in the waning seconds.
North Allegheny took a 2-0 lead with goals by Erik Chidester in the first period and Parks in the second period. However, Canon-McMillan tallied 3 of the next 4 goals to tie the game at 3-3. CM’s Vincent Lavorgna scored two of those goals to help the Big Macs even the score.
That set the stage for the Tigers’ clutch third period and go-ahead goal by Morrison to put NA in front for good. Junior Ryan Heil got the start in net and made 31 saves for the Tigers. Canon-McMillan’s Nico Pidro stopped 30 of 34 shots.
North Allegheny improves to 10-3-1 with the win, sitting one point behind first-place Central Catholic in the Class AAA standings. Canon-McMillan remains under .500 with a 5-7-1 record. The Tigers return to the ice for a road game against Pine-Richland on Monday at 7:00 p.m.
