Third Period Surge Propels Jaguars Over Tigers
By: Jared Barton
Following a Hoosier Cup victory a week ago, the North Allegheny ice hockey team returned to local action, hitting the road against Thomas Jefferson at the Ice Castle Arena Monday night. The Tiger comeback was spoiled with a burst of goals from TJ in the final frame as NA fell 5-2 in AAA action.
The Jaguars found the lone goal of the first period, courtesy of Michael Burns. TJ extended the lead in the second on another even-strength marker from Liam Mahoney. North Allegheny quickly bounced back to cut the lead in half about a minute later, as senior Marc Joyson scored assisted by fellow senior Brock Murphy.
In the early stages of the final frame, the Tigers found more momentum. Senior William Kasunich buried an even-strength goal from Murphy once again to tie the game. Thomas Jefferson had the final say late in the period with three straight goals scored by Lucas Blose, Derek Schliebner and Blose again on an empty net.
Ronnie Porupsky earned the win in net for the Jaguars, stopping 22 shots, while Tigers senior Cam Junker made 24 saves.
The regulation loss prevents NA from making any headway in the standings with just three regular-season games remaining. It’s a quick turnaround for the Tigers with a home matchup from the Baierl Ice Complex on Thursday night. The North Allegheny Sports Network will have live audio coverage of the game against Pine-Richland with faceoff slated for 9:00 p.m.
