
Tigers drop defensive battle with New Castle, 46-37
North Allegheny hosted the New Castle Red Hurricane in the second game of a girl/boy doubleheader at UPMC Court on Tuesday night. It was a defensive struggle, but New Castle’s offense did just enough to come away with the 46-37 victory over the Tigers in Section 1-6A action.
Things were very tight in the opening quarter and no one was able to get more than a one possession lead. New Castle hit a free throw with 0.4 seconds on the clock to give themselves the 9-8 lead after a quarter of play. In the second quarter, things stayed the same as the Red Hurricane outscored the Tigers 8-6 and New Castle led 17-14 at the half.
New Castle made a run in the third quarter expanding their lead to 31-21, but back-to-back three-pointers by Jon Jubeck, including one at the buzzer, cut the New Castle lead to 31-27 going into the fourth quarter. In the final frame, Jubeck stepped up again hitting another three-pointer to make the score 33-30. New Castle outscored the Tigers 13-7 the rest of the way and NA fell 46-37.
Jubeck hit six three-pointers and finished with 18 points. For getting the Tigers back in the game multiple times, Jubeck was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game. Carter Melzer added eight points.
North Allegheny falls to 5-8 overall and 1-6 in section play. New Castle improves to 12-1 overall and 6-1 in the section. The Tigers return to action on Friday night when they host the Butler Golden Tornado at UPMC Court at 7:30 p.m. This game will be broadcast on the North Allegheny Sports Network.
