
Tigers edged by Woodland Hills, 54-52
North Allegheny hosted the Woodland Hills Wolverines on Friday night at UPMC Court. In a game where the Tigers battled back from trailing by double digits, NA just couldn’t get over the hump, ultimately falling to the Wolverines, 54-52.
North Allegheny started with the 6-5 lead, but a 14-2 run helped Woodland Hills gain a 19-7 lead. The teams traded buckets to finish the quarter and the Wolverines led 21-9 after a quarter of play.
The Tigers picked it up in the second quarter, starting the frame with a 10-0 run and cutting the Woodland Hills lead to 21-19. Things remained even the remainder of the period and the Tigers trailed 31-27 at halftime.
The third frame was also very even with NA outscoring the Wolverines 16-12 and just like in the first matchup this season, the score was tied going into the fourth quarter, this time at 43-43.
In the fourth quarter, neither team had bigger than a three-point lead. NA led 50-47 but a mini 6-0 run for Woodland Hills gave them the 53-50 lead. Trailing 54-52 with time running out, the Tigers got a game-winning three-point attempt off, but it fell short and North Allegheny lost 54-52.
Senior Carter Melzer finished with 15 points. Justin Stalter had 10 points. For his efforts, Melzer was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.
It was also senior night for the Tigers as Jon Jubeck, Carson Burns, Melzer and John Nestor were recognized before the game.
North Allegheny falls to 7-12 overall and 2-10 in Section 1-6A. Woodland Hills improves to 8-11 overall and 4-8 in the section. The Tigers are back in action on Tuesday when they host North Hills at UPMC Court at 8:00 p.m. This game will be broadcast live on the North Allegheny Sports Network.
