Tigers fall to Altoona on Day 2 of NA/Wright Automotive Tip-Off Tournament
North Allegheny hosted the Altoona Lady Lions on Sunday afternoon in the second day of the NA/Wright Automotive Tip-Off Tournament. North Allegheny had won on the first day against McKeesport while Altoona fell to South Fayette. On Day 2, the script was flipped as Altoona used a big second half to defeat the Tigers by a score of 57-41.
Both defenses got off to a great start as the first points of the game were not scored until 5:50 remaining in the first quarter. Both offenses got going the remainder of the period and North Allegheny led 15-12 after a quarter of play.
The beginning of the second quarter was very tightly contested as there were multiple ties and lead changes. The Tigers would expand the lead to eight late in the period but Altoona fought all the way back and cut it to two when the teams went to the locker room at halftime with NA leading 29-27. Rosalia Varlotta and Vange Balouris led North Allegheny in the first half scoring 26 of the 29 first half points.
The third quarter started off tight as well with the score tied 31-31. This is when the momentum would flip as Altoona went on a 7-0 run to make the score 38-31. The Tigers would fight back to make the score 39-36 heading into the final quarter. In the final frame, Altoona used great defense and efficient shooting to outscore NA 18-5 and run away with the contest by a final score of 57-41.
Balouris and Varlotta each had 17 points. Varlotta finished with nine rebounds while Balouris had eight. For her efforts, Balouris was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game. Cate Pingpank had six rebounds and four assists.
Melana Eyer led Altoona with 15 points.
North Allegheny falls to 1-1 overall. Altoona improves to 1-1. The Tigers will be back in action on Thursday when they travel across state lines to take on Howland (OH). Tip-off is scheduled for 6:45 p.m.
