The North Allegheny boys’ basketball team fell in its season opener on Friday night, 61-50, at Penn-Trafford High School. The Tigers held a 32-30 lead in the third quarter but a 13-4 run by the Warriors in the final six minutes was enough to give PT the non-section win.

The Tigers and Warriors traded baskets in a tightly contested first half, and PT held a 28-25 lead at intermission. Junior forward Ben Myers led the charge for Penn-Trafford in the first half with eight points and finished with a game-high 14. North Allegheny kept pace thanks to the play of senior forward Khalil Dinkins, who netted eight points in the first half.

Early in the second half, North Allegheny used a 7-0 run to grab a 32-30 lead, keyed on back-to-back buckets by junior guard Kyrell Hutcherson. However, Penn-Trafford pulled ahead, 44-41, by the end of the third quarter and pulled away in the fourth quarter for the win.

Dinkins and junior Matt McDonough finished with 11 points each to lead the Tigers on offense. McDonough was a perfect 6 for 6 from the free-throw line.

For Penn-Trafford, Josh Kapcin joined Myers in double figures with 13 points, including one 3-pointer.

Following the season-opening defeat, North Allegheny is next scheduled to play a game on Jan. 8 at North Hills at 7:30 p.m. Stay tuned to the North Allegheny Athletics website for the latest on schedule updates for the winter sports season.
