Tigers Hockey Wins Hoosier Cup
By: Jared Barton
The North Allegheny ice hockey team traveled to Notre Dame for the 9th annual Hoosier Cup over the weekend. The Tigers came out on top winning the tournament championship Monday. Senior goalie Cam Junker was given the Lafferty Award for tournament MVP, and junior Joey Mitchell was the team leader in points for the weekend.
On Saturday, North Allegheny beat St. Andrew’s Prep 3-2 in a shootout. NA lost a preliminary round game Sunday to Culver 2-1 in a shootout. Later in the day, the Tigers had a bounce-back 3-0 win over St. Edward’s.
On Monday during a medal round, North Allegheny beat Culver 1-0 making up for the earlier loss. That win placed them in the final for a rematch against St. Edward’s on Monday afternoon. NA won 2-1 in regulation.
Last season, NA reached the Hoosier Cup final but ultimately fell 1-0 in double overtime to Edina. The team used that weekend to spark a deep postseason run, as the Tigers advanced to the Penguins Cup finals a month later. North Allegheny is hoping to ride the same momentum this year. NA returns to regular season action in a critical road matchup with Thomas Jefferson on February 17th.
