Tigers Narrowly Fall To Seneca Valley On Criteria
The North Allegheny wrestling team was edged by the Seneca Valley Raiders on criteria on Tuesday night to break a 36-36 tie in the section opener. The Tigers fell behind by 14 points within the first six bouts of the match but staged a furiously rally to tie the score at 36-36. Unfortunately for NA, the Raiders held the tiebreaker and won on criteria to hold on for the narrow victory.
Thanks in large part to falls by Louis Newell (113), Zane Frund (120) and Ben Lynch (126), the Raiders built a 21-7 advantage. The Tigers scratched back with a fall by Jake Hinkson at 138 pounds over Nick Montalbano to cut the score to 21-13, but SV regained their 14-point lead in the next weight class with a win by forfeit to raise the score to 27-13, Raiders.
Undaunted, the Tigers won three of the next four bouts to take a 31-30 lead with two bouts remaining. Sean Kalmeyer pinned Tyler Gross at 152 pounds, Jacob Fritch pinned Zach Cowell at 170 pounds and Jake Woodley pinned Dustin Moniot at 182 to put NA in front by one point.
However, another win by forfeit for Seneca Valley at 195 pounds gave the Raiders a 36-31 advantage. At 220 pounds, NA’s Francis Duggan thoroughly dominated Gabe Miller for a 16-1 tech fall victory an tied the meet at 36-36, but Miller’s ability to avoid pin fall was just enough to allow Seneca Valley to claim the win.
North Allegheny sits at 0-1 in section action while Seneca Valley is 1-0. The Tigers will take part in the King of the Mountain Tournament this weekend.
