Tigers Pick Off First-Place Peters Township, 5-1
The North Allegheny ice hockey team knocked off the first-place Peters Township Indians on Thursday night with a convincing 5-1 victory at the Baierl Ice Complex. The Tigers were outshot, 34-19, but withstood the persistent Peters Township pressure thanks to a sterling performance from goalie Richard Karapandi who made 33 saves.
With Karapandi holding Peters Township at bay, the Tigers skaters provided more than enough support on the scoreboard and took a 2-0 lead in the first period. Junior Aaron Miller netted the game’s first goal at the 12:52 mark of the period and Dylan Watkins tallied a power play goal with just nine seconds to play in the opening stanza for the two-goal advantage.
The NA lead swelled to 3-0 in the second period when Will Parreaguire scored his first goal of the night. Parreaguire’s second marker came at the 2:38 mark of the third period for a 4-0 lead.
Peters Township netted its only goal at 4:51 of the third on an unassisted goal by Mark Lehman to break the shutout. Miller capped the scoring with his second goal of the game at the 6:31 mark to bring the game to a 5-1 conclusion.
With the win, North Allegheny improves to 8-4-1 on the season and leaps into a three-way tie for second place in Class AAA with Cathedral Prep and Seneca Valley. Peters Township slips to 9-1-0-1 on the year. The Tigers will look to continue their winning ways with a visit to Butler on Monday at 9:10 p.m.
