Tigers Secure 8th Straight Section Title

The North Allegheny girls’ basketball team defeated the North Hills Indians on Friday night, 44-27, to become co-section champions with Norwin in Section 1-6A. It’s the eighth straight season the Tigers have earned a section crown.

The night started slow for North Allegheny as North Hills utilized a deliberate pace for a 19-16 lead at intermission. Junior Abigail McElhaney spearheaded the Indians attack with 14 points and four 3-pointers. Of her 14 points, 11 came in the first half, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer just before halftime.

In the second half, the game belonged to North Allegheny. The Tigers used an 10-0 run to take a 26-19 lead and never looked back. The NA defense increased the intensity in the second half and limited the Indians to just eight points over the final 16 minutes.

Junior Lizzy Groetsch netted a game-high 19 points on her way to Wright Automotive Player of the Game honors. Junior Paige Morningstar touched double figures as well with 10 points, eight coming in the second half.

With the win, North Allegheny improves to 18-3 overall and 13-1 in Section 1-6A. North Hills drops to 6-15 overall and 2-12 in the section. The Tigers will visit Oakland Catholic on Monday at 6:00 p.m. in a non-section tune-up for the postseason.
