Tigers Send One to Section 2 Finals
The WPIAL Section 2 Singles Tournament opened play on the NASH courts Tuesday morning, and the play was outstanding and entertaining. The Tigers number two singles player, senior Manas Kathir, was seeded fifth overall and won both his first round and quarterfinal matches by comfortable margins. Freshman Shaun Fernando, the Tigers number one singles player and third seed also took his first two matches by wide margins
The Tigers were the only team to send two players to the semi-final round, where matches were best of three regular sets. Kathir squared off against the first seeded Anthony Lounder of Moon Area and fell 6-0, 3-0 (retired). Fernando faced the second seed, Josh Dunham of Mars and took the contest in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, thereby punching his ticket to the championship round.
All four participants have qualified for the WPIAL Singles Championship to be played April 11 and 12. In the meantime, Wednesday afternoon on the NASH courts Kathir will play Dunham of Mars for third place. That match is scheduled for noon. Fernando will then tangle with Moon’s Lounder for the Section 2 championship starting at 2 PM.
