Tigers Take 2nd Place At Eastern Area Tournament

The North Allegheny wrestling team opened the 2015-16 season with a second place finish at the Eastern Area Wrestling Tournament at Gateway High School. The Tigers totaled a team score of 208.5, finishing narrowly behind first-place Kiski Area who tallied a team score of 226.

The tournament also marked the debut of Sonny Abe as the Tigers head coach. Abe is a former Olympian, All-American at Penn State and most recently coached at Pittsburgh Central Catholic before coming to North Allegheny.

Helping lead the way for the NA grapplers were Jake Hinkson and Sean Hoover who both earned tournament gold. Hinkson won the 138 pound title with a 3-2 decision over Kiski’s Joe Blumer. Hoover took gold at 160 pounds with a 3-2 decision over Tom Starr of Kiski.

Other top finishers for the Tigers included Francis Duggan who garnered silver at 220 pounds. Jacob Downing (106), Sean Kalmeyer (152), and Jake Woodley (182) all picked up bronze medals in their respective weight classes.

With an impressive run through the consolation bracket at 132 pounds, Will Baierl earned a fifth place finish. At heavyweight, Charles Sanders also took fifth place. Picking up sixth
