The North Allegheny ice hockey team opened the 2020-2021 season on Monday night with a 5-1 victory over the Central Catholic Vikings at the Baierl Ice Complex.

After COVID cut short NA’s playoff run a season ago, the Tigers hit the ice with eager anticipation and stormed out of the gates with a strong first period. Sophomore forward Austin Peterson started the scoring with a power play goal 1:05 into the game and netted another goal just over a minute later to give the Tigers an immediate 2-0 lead. Junior Luke Washabaugh added a goal with 16 seconds remaining in the opening stanza for a 3-0 advantage.

The lone goal of the second period belonged to Central Catholic as Loch Davis tallied a power play goal at the 4:56 mark, trimming the NA lead to 3-1.

The Tigers put the game away in the third period on goals from junior Shane O’Neill and senior Aaron Mark, capping off a 5-1 victory.

In net, senior goalie Josh Bailey stopped 33 of 34 shots to earn the victory. Central Catholic goalie Jake Dold made 27 saves in a losing effort.

Following the season-opening win, North Allegheny will visit Upper St. Clair on Monday, Nov. 9 at 9:00 p.m.
