Tigers Win Section Joust With Knights, 57-41
For the past two seasons, North Allegheny and Norwin have shared the Section 1-6A title. In the first of two meetings between these Class 6A heavyweights, the top-ranked Tigers earned a 57-41 win over the Knights on Friday night from NASH.
The Tigers continued their trend of starting fast, opening the game with an 8-0 run and led 17-11 after one quarter of play. Junior Emma Fischer had the hot hand early and buried three 3-pointers.
Norwin began to settle into the contest in the second quarter and cut the NA lead to 31-28 by halftime. The Knights found their rhythm from the perimeter and were sparked by junior Brianna Zajicek, who scored 16 of her team-high 20 points in the first half.
In the second half, North Allegheny raised the defensive intensity and limited Norwin to just 13 points for the rest of the game. Seniors Lizzy Groetsch and Paige Morningstar netted 18 and 13 points, respectively, as the Tigers pulled away for a 57-41 win.
Along with her 18 points, Groetsch was the primary defender on Norwin senior guard Danielle Rosso, and limited the West Liberty commit to just five points on the night. All five points came late in the fourth quarter with the game well out of reach. For her efforts on offense and defense, Groetsch was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.
With the win, North Allegheny improves to 9-0 overall and 7-0 in Section 1-6A. Norwin dips to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the section. The Tigers will visit Butler on Monday night.
