Top-Ranked NA Defeats No. 2 Northeastern On Way To Shaler Invitational Title
In a final tune-up before the WPIAL playoffs this week, the North Allegheny Tigers captured the title at the Shaler Invitational on Saturday. The top-ranked team in the state went 5-0-1 at the tournament, including a pair of wins over Northeastern, the second-ranked team in Pennsylvania.
The Tigers were sparked by senior middle blocker David Sanfillipo with a team-best 26 kills and .600 hitting percentage, to go along with a team-leading 13 blocks. Seniors Michael Mosbacher and Garrett Hrvoich helped power the offense as well with 25 and 24 kills, respectively. Mosbacher also tallied a team-best six service aces. Junior setter Caleb Schall posted five aces and facilitated the NA attack with 108 assists. On defense, Peter Carioto led with 33 digs and Ryan Treser contributed 30 digs.
North Allegheny will await the release of the WPIAL Class AAA playoff brackets this week. The Tigers are vying for a fourth straight WPIAL crown and a third straight state championship.
